Editor’s note: Nicole and Javier, who asked that their last name not be given for personal reasons, and their son Nathan returned to Huntington Beach Fire Station 6 on Monday, a year after Nathan was surrendered there, in a basket, and shortly after his birth. The couple adopted Nathan and wanted to meet the firefighters who cared for him briefly. Without a way to thank Nathan’s anonymous birth mother, Nicole wrote the following letter.
Dear Wonderful Birth Mama,
As I sit here and look at tiny baby shoes, I want to let you know how incredibly thankful my husband and I are for you and the choices you made. The choice was yours; you chose life for your unborn son. Thank you for his precious life.
You kept him safe during your pregnancy; he was in perfect health when you brought him to the fire station. Thank you for taking great care of him. We know the decision you made was difficult and selfless, but you did it out of love for him.
We imagine you must think of him often. You must know he is deeply loved by us and our entire extended family. He is a very happy and healthy boy. He is smart and affectionate and very funny. His smile brings joy to everyone he meets. Also, he has eight teeth and will be walking in no time. He is truly a blessing.
You have done for us what no one else ever could, and we could never thank you enough for that. Someday, we hope to meet you and see where he gets his eyes, his smile, and his sweet temperament.
Just know that we love you and that you are in our hearts and prayers forever. We tell him that you love him and that you took wonderful care of him when he was in your tummy. He will grow up knowing about you.
We are forever thankful to God and to you. Our dreams have come true after many difficult years of waiting. But with our joy, we realize there is loss. We will always remember the sacrifice that was made, your courageous choices, and your love for this little boy.
“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you, the Lord lift his countenance upon you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26
Love, Javier and Nicole
