Permanency Tip of the Week: Cultural Permanency – What is it / Why is it important?
In the discussion of Permanency, the focus understandably often centers on relational permanency; however the crucial role of culture in the pursuit of Permanency needs to be addressed as well. The cultural experience of our Youth in foster care is at high risk of being one of profound loss as ties to their family, community and traditions can become severed during entry into foster care along with the multiple moves that can occur during their time in foster care. As we pursue Permanency for our Youth, be sure to ask the Youth and all of their Connections, about their Culture and seek out ways to strengthen this critical aspect of everyone’s life.

Wyden Offers Ideas for Improving Child Welfare System
U.S. Senate Committee on Finance – The Wyden proposal would expand the federal foster care entitlement to do more than just pay a daily rate to keep children housed in foster care homes. Instead, States and Tribes would be able to use foster care funds to provide families in crisis with the supports, services, and evidence-based interventions needed to keep their children safely at home and out of foster care.
Most Kids Exit Foster Care to Live with Parents, Relatives and Guardians
Annie E. Casey Foundation – In 2013, a total of 238,547 children exited the foster care system. Of those, 45% were white, 24% African American and 20% Latino. Two out of three (66%) of those exiting care were either reunified with their parents or primary caretakers, other relatives or guardians; and 21% were adopted.
